Here’s a radical notion: if a character is gay, I don’t know, maybe DEPICT HIM AS GAY!?
I have a whole lotta feelings about there being “no explicit mention” of Dumbledore’s homosexuality in the upcoming Fantastic Beasts film.
In 2007 J.K Rowling stated that Dumbledore was gay and that his great love was Grindelwald. The upcoming movie is the story of Dumbledore chasing down the dark wizard Grindelwald, so not only is Dumbledore’s sexuality factually relevant to the storyline, but it would only improve the plot. I’m damn sure if it was a hetero couple in place of Dumbledore and Grindelwald, this relationship would be played up for all it’s worth. To me it absolutely feels like a homophobic decision to omit Dumbledore’s sexuality because they are most definitely treating him differently than they would a heterosexual character.
Stating that Dumbledore is gay and then not following through with representing him as such really let’s down the LGBTIQ community. JK Rowling got a pat on the back for outing Dumbledore back in 2007, but that doesn’t mean shit if we don’t ever get to actually SEE queer representation. I also find any argument that Dumbledore’s sexuality wouldn’t be appropriate or “family friendly” hugely problematic as this sends a devastating and long reaching message/stigma about homosexuality and Queerness.
The fans deserve a factually correct movie, the LGBTIQ community deserves more (and better) representation and Dumbledore, poor Dumbledore, he deserves so much more than to be shoved back in the closet.
